Bass Marimba
Basses are made to order so each one is different. Some of the options are described below.
Keys/TuningKeys are tuned by hand to the fundamental, first, and second overtone. They can be made out of several different kinds of wood. Cherry, Maple, and Wenge work well. Padauk is also available, but because of it's resonance, is usually only used for basses without resonator tubes. The width of the keys is also an option. 6 inch wide keys make a compact bass, but sacrifice sound volume. FramesBasses with 6 inch wide keys usually have a frame with folding or detachable legs similar to the smaller instruments. Larger basses usually have a frame that comes apart for easy transportation like the one pictured above. The frame can also be designed to tilt the keys towards the player. Resonator TubesResonator tubes made of PVC pipe are available. They amplify the sound and provide the traditional african buzzing sound. They can be painted black or left white.
